Paris-based artist Aurélie HoegyIn her dynamic rattan works, she expertly creates a seamless vacillation in movement, material, or environment. Each form has a relentless ebb, like the ocean waves’ beguiling dance. Wild FibersHoegy uses the material’s strength and malleability to create a series that invites a dialogue between the object and the gesture.
Hoegy, who grew up in the tropical rainforests of Indonesia, has always been fascinated with rattan. A residency in Bali triggered her rediscovery, and she fell in love with the fiber once more. She immersed herself in its rich history with the assistance of local artisans. She explains that:
I was fascinated by their gestures: they work using their entire body, including their feet. They dance with the fibre. It’s a refined piece of work, and they were delighted to pass on to me their know-how, which they know is under threat.
Models are created for each piece, regardless of whether it is a sofa, a chaise or a chair. Using a 3D printer, the artist approaches the feat by considering the material’s integrity. Hoegy explains, “I take into account both the natural and mechanical reactions of the fiber, letting it live and express itself. It is a collaboration!”The result is sumptuous, life-like forms that document the dance between body, medium, and art.
